Soda P hails from the Netherlands. Joost Olsthoorn (drums, sequencer), Jeremy Jongepier (guitar, vocals) and Aldert Zegwaard (bass) found the band in 1994 and start playing mainly songs written by Jeremy. But the urge to create songs together to fully exploit the possibilities of a three-piece slowly prevails resulting in much more coherent songs that draw the attention of Zabel Muziek who will release their first single (Closer To The Core, 2000). With the release of a 10” (Remove To Return, 2001) Soda P further expands their name and their efforts, in the studio and on stage, do not remain unnoticed. When they are asked to join Green Lizard, one of the bigger Dutch alternative rock acts, on their Newborn tour in 2002 they immediately seize the opportunity and fully bury themselves in the routine of playing 2 to 3 times a week for three months. This tour not only strengthens their live reputation but also their financial position, making it possible to record their first full length at the Next To Jaap Studio (Zoppo, Blues Brother Castro, Feverdream). The positive reactions to this album (Downbuilt, 2003) put Soda P on the Dutch indie map definitively. They get the opportunity to play a lot of shows at major venues and slowly start saving for the recordings of a second album. Hits The City (2006), recorded again at the Next To Jaap Studio, is the album where it all comes together: the journey from a lo-fi history through a post-rock landscape to an indie-rock act that has got its shit together and does not renounce its roots, be it indie-rock, post-rock or simply pure pop music.

Soda P’s music can be best described by the way of its band members. Joost is the designer, the one able to turn an idea into something tangible. Jeremy is the almost archetypal songwriter, the one who merges ideas, comes up with the melodies and maps out the song structures. Aldert is the architect, the builder, the one providing an esthetically sound, solid base. Together with their influences that vary from Tortoise, Slint, Karate and June of 44 to The Posies, The Lemonheads, Sebadoh and Dinosaur Jr. and their preference for songs with latent tension wrapped up in melancholy, hope and passion it may become clear what Soda P sounds like. Add to this the band’s tendency to decompose song structures, restructuring them with a minimalist approach while at the same time fully exploiting the possibilities of a three-piece and one might grasp that for Soda P it’s all about writing good songs that demonstrate craftsmanship.

Soda P has shared the stage with numerous leading bands like a.o. Blonde Redhead, Victory At Sea, The Dismemberment Plan, Enon, 31 Knots, Xiu Xiu and Dianogah. The band is inextricably linked with the Dutch indie scene, not only through their loyalty towards the now defunct Zabel Muziek label, one of the leading Dutch indie labels at the time, but also given their friendly connections with a great deal of Dutch indie bands, including We vs. Death, Feverdream, Audiotransparent, Zoppo, Mono, Mercy Giants and Blues Brother Castro.
